Richard P. Hill is a widely experienced civil trial lawyer who, over a 37 year legal career in San Francisco, has handled, on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants, numerous difficult and challenging civil lawsuits in various areas of the law. Mr. Hill's experience includes every stage of the litigation process from initial investigation and analysis through trial and the appellate process.
Mr. Hill has long been and is currently peer-rated AV (Highest Rating in Legal Ability & Ethical Standards) by the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating Process, and in 2008 was recognized as a Northern California “Superlawyer” in the Labor & Employment law field. Most recently, Mr. Hill was recognized with a 2009 CLAY (California Lawyer of the Year) award by California Lawyer Magazine for his role as victorious plaintiff's counsel for the San Francisco Bay Guardian in a landmark unfair competition case involving below cost pricing prohibitions under California's Unfair Practices Act.
The California Lawyer declared in making the award, “In a David and Goliath face-off between San Francisco's two rival alternative weeklies, [plaintiff's counsel] deftly made the case for the San Francisco Bay Guardian's unfair competition lawsuit against SF Weekly, winning $6.4 million in damages, which Judge Marla J. Miller later increased to more than $18 million.”
Mr. Hill has done extensive lecturing to other lawyers on Employment Law topics, and has edited a widely-used litigation practice book chapter on California Employment Law issues. Mr. Hill's success on behalf of civil litigation plaintiffs has earned him membership in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, recognizing multiple judgments and settlements in the amount of One Million Dollars or more.
Mr. Hill's notable trials and settlements have included unfair competition and antitrust claims under state and federal law, probate disputes concerning the validity of purported testamentary documents, prosecution and defense of wrongful termination of employment claims, distributorship contract disputes, constitutional challenges to local government rate-making, constitutional challenges to local government creation of investigative powers, federal false claims act recapture of grant funds used in cases of scientific fraud, defense of products liability actions, and prosecution of plaintiff's severe personal injury claims.
Mr. Hill is a third generation native of San Francisco. He was raised in Burlingame on the San Francisco Peninsula, and now lives on the Peninsula, in Belmont, with his wife of 33 years, Diane. The Hills have two grown children, Miranda and Nathaniel, both of whom are graduates of the University of California system.
